Merry Christmas Everyone

Let's celebrate with Irish news organisations embarrassing people.

I can't imagine the camera person's reaction. On one hand comedy gold, on the other ouch. I do love the fact RTÉ actually used it on the news across the day.

Equal parts cute and funny. I wonder if Irish news is going to start a trend of showing embarrassing/funny footage of people.

Also, there is so much snow outside. It looks like it's finally stopped but there's a lot to melt and the paths/roads are still covered in snow and ice so be careful visiting family and friends over Christmas if where you live has been hit with it.

Sorry, it's too funny not to keep sharing. (I now know how to post moving gifs \o/)

Merry Christmas!

Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol Trailer

Because I just remembered the other day I'd forgotten to post it.

Geeky, wibbly wobbly timey wimey thought. Does the 'Time can be rewritten' mean that time and certain key events as fixed is no longer part of the Whoniverse? That time is just up for grabs for want of a better term? Or will there be consequences a la The Reapers from 'Fathers Day'? Just wondering since time being rewritten was a part of s5 because of the cracks which I assume are fixed now so time should be back to normal.
Then again this is just the Christmas episode. I doubt there's going to be anything game changing going on.

Also I need to get my hands on the series 5 boxset and soundtrack.

Snowpocalypse

I can't believe we've not only gotten snow twice in the one year, but proper, sticks to the ground, lasts more than a day, omg it's properly freezing out snow. January (and the end of December) felt like a fluke. You know that once in however many decades, I-remember-when-I-was-young kind of cold. My Granny had even said that the last time she remembered cold that bad was back in the early 60s around the time one of my uncles was born. And yet here we are with the same weather in the same year only with more snow. It's largely thawed out by now (although it took it's time) but by the looks of the long range forecast we're in for more.

These were taken Wednesday afternoon (1 December). This is already a pretty decent amount of snow for Dublin. (click pictures to embiggen)

And then we got a lot more snow. Not just Wednesday afternoon but it didn't stop snowing on Thursday. As in foot prints don't reach the ground and you can't make out where the path or road begin. (That bit that looks a bit like the path is actually a small wall that the fence comes out of.)

I think the back garden pics give a better perspective on how deep the snow was.

I know for a lot of people this doesn't look like much snow but for Ireland it is. We can handle a lot of wind and rain but we're not a climate of extremes so when we get any kind of extreme it's a big deal. Looking at the current weather warning and long range forecast we've definitely got more on the way.

It's Christmas!

In celebration of December 1st (the day I actually accept Christmas is coming) I give thee a completely random selection of Christmas music.

'It Feels Like Christmas' from The Muppet Christmas Carol (aka my childhood and current Christmas love movie)

'Carol of the Bells' from Home Alone. I adore this song. I love listening to it and I love singing it in a choir.

'What's This?' from The Nightmare Before Christmas because it's just so infectious and fun.

'Must Be Santa' by Bob Dylan. This album was the only Christmas one I could stand working in a shop last Christmas. Thank god for the guy who brought it in or I would've gone insane.

And in honour of the serious snow we're getting in Ireland right not, particularly in the east of the country, 'Let it Snow' by Dean Martin.

First Essay of the Semester

... and I'm procrastinating so bad. It's not even proper procrastination where I actively look for other things to do (well, aside from posting this) it's more I'll be reading and my mind just wanders off in a different direction. 'As Jean Baudrillard suggests in the case of ... blah object blah subject blah ... Wait, what did that paragraph say?' It probably doesn't help that the article I'm currently reading has the combination of a smaller than usual font size and a lot of dense sentences with many syllable words. The irony of all this is that I had planned to get all this done early but than my computer died and I lost any chance of getting work done between not having my laptop and then trying to fix everything.
It can also just be frustrating that an essay that's only 1,000 words and only worth 10% requires so much work. Then again I personally think I'm terrible at handling short essays. I always read and plan too much and end up having to leave loads out. The joy of editing. I want to be done by Wednesday because I'm not home most of Thursday and I don't want to have to be frantically trying to write on essay on my bday when it's due. I think my main problem is my mind thinking 'hey you've written a heck of a lot more than that in one day'. Which is true, I got 3,000 in a day before, but it doesn't mean I want to have to do it.

I was going to post a .gif but apparently it just stays as a static picture which saddens me. Have some Grover instead. He doesn't get enough love nowadays.

Internal Hard Disk Drive Not Found

My laptop died last week. It's a bit of a mix between how much was backed up and how much I lost but it's basically all fine now, just a pain trying to get everything back the way I want it. Although I guess you can now say that the name Roslin fits better, came back from near death and straight back to work. Mind you that did lead to the election against Gauis and the fun that was New Caprica. And that was before the Cylons arrived.
Please don't turn on me laptop.

I will say this, by the time I'm done making sure everything's back to the way I like it, my laptop is going to be extremely organised.

Anyway, here's some Eddie Izzard on computers and technology.

Repo Man

I totally forgot Ray LaMontagne had just released a new album. I love Ray LaMontagne. I already own his three previous albums and he's one of those artists that I'd buy an album from without having to hear a single track before hand. Here's the opening track 'Repo Man' from the album 'God Willin' & the Creek Don't Rise' by Ray LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs.

Criminal Minds 6x02: JJ

Spoilers ahead for the latest series of Criminal Minds. I know I hate spoilers so consider this your warning to stop reading this post now if you don't want to know what happened.

Alternate title: Screw you CBS! We're going to make it perfectly clear that we're not happy!

A while ago it was revealed that the network, CBS, had decided to make some changes to the cast which ended with Jennifer 'JJ' Jareau, played by AJ Cook, leaving the show and Emily Prentiss, played by Paget Brewster, being in a reduced number of episodes, as well as this being her final series. Fandom has raged over this for various reasons; the breaking up of such a great cast that works so well together, the sexism of removing/reducing the role of 2 of the 3 female team members and that being the 2 who are the most active and out in the field, the fact no one had any say or idea what was about to happen, the fact that it was for monetary reasons, etc.

The cast and crew feel the same and haven't even tried to hide it. When the news first broke they reacted just the same as the fans of the show. But in this weeks episode, JJ, they expressed their feelings again within the show itself and made sure to let us and each other know that they are not happy. I know some people might not like how meta it got but I did.

The whole situation is there in the episode, as plain as day. From JJ being forced to leave by a decision that Hotch or not even Strauss could change because it came from too high up the chain, to a subtle nod at Prentiss with the team asking if she knew anything, to the whole closing section of the show in which the writers (as Hotch addressing JJ), the actors (the whole teams reaction) and AJ (JJ's form which narrates the closing minute). There was even a nod to the clear sexism of the decision with JJ sarcastically telling Garcia 'There's plenty of big strong men around'.
Hotch's address to JJ when he was telling her she had to leave straight away was the writers addressing us, and the fact he said he was going to try and get her back gives me at least a little hope that maybe, just maybe, this might get sorted some day. But I suppose I should just be happy that she got a dignified exit.

I'm not going to get into the issue of women and female characters on TV, it's too long and rage inducing and I'm in a pretty good mood right now, but I will say I'm going to miss having a character like JJ on TV and I'm going to miss Prentiss when she eventually goes too.

And so begins my regular posting ...

... or at least I hope so now that everything is back in swing again after the summer. I started back college last Monday, I'm happily volunteering and hey TV shows are starting back.

Friday night was Culture Night. Culture Night is an annual event which started in Dublin and has spread throughout the country where various cultural institutions open their doors to the public for free with lots of extra tours, events and entertainment. The queues alone for some places were insane and one of my sisters couldn't believe how packed town was with people.

I didn't get to see as much as I wanted because I was waiting on said sister to help her get her stuff into town so I got in later than planned. I did enjoy a choir singing and a tour in the National Gallery of Ireland as well as a tour in the National Library of Ireland and wandering around their exhibitions.
I think next year I should have a full scale plan. Or even better, I vote next year it's Culture Day or Culture Weekend.

Doctor Who Series 6 Ep 1

Myself and my brother have figured out how the first ep of the next series of Doctor Who is going to go thanks to the video below.

Ann Marie says:

Haha, Matt Smith playing the DW theme tune at Glastonbury link

J says:

who knew doctor who could play synthesisers

Ann Marie says:

Next season the Doctor takes Amy and Rory to Glastonbury but of course something goes wrong
The music is actually some complicated machine to save the day.

J says:

so somewhere in that crowd there is some sort of alien being beaten by music

Ann Marie says:

Yup, some technobabble to do with the sound and frequency. The Doctor's chuffed with all the cheering but he's a bit busy trying to save the day

J says:

but he loves putting on a show like his crazy dancing in the season finale

Ann Marie says:

True, he particularly loves the glasses with the lights on the side cause they're cool. Glasses with torches strapped to the side are cool. He's just glad River's not around to blow them up this time.
He still mourns that fez.

New Blog ...

... kinda.

I want to make a decent go at blogging (yeah I know) so I've decided to start a new one. My old ones still there in my profile but I'm not going to be updating that anymore (like that's such a loss). Anyway this is just me setting things up to my liking til I start posting.
